ActionSA has labelled the latest appointment of Minister Thembi Nkadimeng a “last-ditch cowardly Cabinet reshuffle” by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
This follows the announced by Ramaphosa, on Tuesday, that Nkadimeng, who was the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, has been appointed as the Minister of Human Settlements.
The President issued a statement explaining that the changes have been made in order to ensure the effectiveness of Cabinet in delivering on its mandate and in accordance with section 91(2) of the Constitution.
Consequently, Mmamoloko Kubayi has now been appointed as the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development.
Minister Nkadimeng is facing allegations of involvement in the Polokwane Municipality’s “unlawful investment” into the VBS Bank during the same period when she reportedly solicited a loan of R575,000 from VBS investment broker, Gundo Wealth Solutions, all while serving as Mayor of the city.
On 26 August 2024, ActionSA wrote to the President, urging him to suspend Minister Nkadimeng.
“Simply put, if the Minister was deemed no longer fit to serve as Minister of Justice due to allegations of potential corruption and questionable sources of wealth beyond her declared earnings, then surely the President cannot now expect us to believe that she is perfectly suited to lead a critically important portfolio like Human Settlements, overseeing billions of Rands,” ActionSA stated.
The party added that Ramaphosa’s move also “highlights the fact that his own Phala Phala demons continue to hamstring his actions when it comes to dealing with corruption in his cabinet”.
