uMkhonto weSizwe Party Member of Parliament, Andile Mngxitama, has warned that the remarks by incoming president of the United States of America, Donald Trump, are a declaration of war with the BRICS countries.
On Sunday, Trump wrote on X threatening that there is no chance of the BRICS bloc replacing the U.S. dollar in international trade, stressing that “any country that tries should wave goodbye to America”.
“The idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the Dollar while we stand by and watch is OVER. We require a commitment from these Countries that they will neither create a new BRICS Currency, nor back any other Currency to replace the mighty U.S. Dollar or, they will face 100% Tariffs, and should expect to say goodbye to selling into the wonderful U.S. Economy,” said Trump.
Reacting to Trump’s utterances, Mngxitama stated: “Some thought Trump is a better racist and imperialist but he just declared war the BRICS countries. He says these sovereign countries have no right to drop the USA dollar. Like really??? Whoever is USA president serves imperialism.”
In an effort to bring clarity on the matter, Clayson Monyela, International Relations and Cooperation spokesperson said it is not true that BRICS countries are planning to create a new currency.
“There’s no BRICS plan for a common currency. The discussion is around trading among member states using own currencies,” Monyela explained.
The US Dollar currently accounts for over 90 per cent of global trade transactions.
