The Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC) has vehemently condemned the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) attempts to get the United States directly involved in South Africa’s general elections.
These attempts by the DA “gravely undermine our sovereignty and the integrity of our electoral systems,” the PAC said in a statement.
In a letter dated 07 March 2024, DA Shadow Minister for International Relations and Co-operation, Emma Louise Powell wrote to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken requesting that his government intervenes in the upcoming national and provincial elections (NPE2024) taking place on 29 May.

Ms Powell made the request for the DA in its capacity as the official opposition party. She appealed to the US government “to recognize the high stakes for South Africa in the lead up to, and aftermath of the NPE2024”.
“Inviting American involvement in our elections is not only irresponsible but borders on treason. We stand firm in our dedication to preserving our nation’s autonomy and ensuring that our democratic processes remain free from foreign interference,” the PAC maintained.
As part of her demands to the US Secretary of State, the DA Member of Parliament asked for any available resources that could be directed into Independent Parallel Vote Tabulation process, run by private organisations.
In addition, Ms Powell highlighted her party’s need for technological resources that could be used to impact the country’s election outcomes.
