Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan says the country’s three top officials, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, are behind the assassination attempt on him.
Khan was wounded in his leg during a shooting incident at an anti-Government rally in the city of Gujranwala in Punjab province, on Thursday, a local TV station reported citing the police.
At least one person was killed in the incident, according to Faisal Javed, a senior PTI politician and close Khan ally who received a wound to the head.
Several other people including senior leaders of Khan’s Tehreek-e-Insaf political party also suffered injuries.
In a video message, Umar, the party’s Secretary General, said Khan told him he is sure Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, and an official from the country’s premier intelligence agency, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), are involved.
“The three persons should be removed from their posts, and if they are not, there will be a countrywide protest. Pakistan cannot function in this manner,” Umar said.
Khan left office in April 2022 after the lower house of the Parliament held a vote of no confidence, in what he has alleged to be a US-sponsored campaign.
