The Spokeswoman of Russia’s Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova has challenged the United States to acknowledge its role in the Nord Stream gas pipeline leaks.
During a media briefing on Thursday, she made reference to a video clip of Joe Biden’s speech on February 7 saying that if Russia invaded Ukraine, “then there will no longer be a Nord Stream 2” gas pipeline.
“In any case, the United States should explain itself and confess after all,” Zakharova emphasized.
On Tuesday, the Nord Stream AG company reported that three threads of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 offshore gas pipelines had suffered unprecedented damage on Monday.
A fourth leak has since been identified by the Swedish Coast Guard on Thursday off the coast of Sweden, authorities said in a press statement.
Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Moscow was “deeply concerned about the news” and did not rule out that the pipelines’ operation could have been disrupted by an act of sabotage.
“At the same time, the unprecedented nature of this event – it seems that this is some kind of terrorist attack, possibly at the state level – of course, requires very active, intense cooperation.
“This is an extremely dangerous situation that requires urgent investigation,” Peskov suggested.
Denmark’s Energy Agency said a large amount of natural gas had streamed out. Aircraft and vessels were advised to stay at least five miles away from the site of the incident.
