Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development on Monday called for public comments on applications and nominations received for a vacancy to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC).
Committee Chairperson, Mr Xola Nqola, revealed that the committee received a total of 46 applications and nominations.
He said a list of all the nominations and applications received is now available on the Parliament website in order to allow members of the public to comment on the suitability of candidates.
The objectives of the SAHRC are to promote respect for human rights and a culture of human rights; to promote the protection, development, and attainment of human rights, and to monitor and assess the observance of human rights in the Republic.
Applicants for the vacancy must be a South African citizen and are expected to comply with the requirements prescribed by national legislation, in particular section 5 (b) of the South African Human Rights Commission Act, 2013.
Nqola said all candidates will be subjected to suitability screening and verification of qualifications.
