The Pan-Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC) has hit out at StatsSA for failing to put enough focus on land restitution, following the release of South Africa’s Census 2022 national results.
In a statement, the PAC said that the issue of land dispossession remains a fundamental injustice which affects the great majority of this country.
“Land restitution is a crucial issue for the PAC, and we are disappointed by the census report’s limited attention to this matter. Land dispossession remains a fundamental injustice affecting millions of South Africans, particularly African communities,” the Party stated.
It further added that the failure to capture data on land ownership, redistribution, and the progress made in land restitution undermines the efforts to rectify historical injustices.
“By neglecting this issue, the census report undermines the struggle for land restitution and perpetuates the legacy of colonialism and apartheid.”

South Africa’s first digital census was handed over to President Cyril Ramaphosa by Statistician-General Risenga Maluleke at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Tuesday.
The data presented by StatsSA shows that the population increased from 40.5 million in 1996 to just over 62 million in 2022; an increase of over 21.4 million people in 26 years.
“Black Africans remain consistently the dominant population group at a proportion of more than 80%, followed by the coloured and white populations at 8.2% and 7.3% in 2022, respectively.
“On the other hand, the Indian/Asian population comprised less than 3% of the population over the years,” Maluleke announced.
The population and housing census was conducted in February 2022 and is intended to provide comprehensive data on population size, demographic trends, and other service delivery related information.
