Rise Mzansi says the State’s ability to protect the South African citizens is being challenged following another mass shooting in Qumbu, Eastern Cape.
Reacting to the news, Member of Parliament (MP) Makashule Gana reiterated the party’s call “for the capacitation of Crime Intelligence, the Detective Service and Visible Policing” in the country.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) reported that on Sunday, 6 October 2024 around 22:45, a group of at least eight men armed with rifles and handguns allegedly opened fire to members of the Community Policing Forum (CPF).

SAPS stated that six people succumbed to their injuries and four victims were rushed to the nearest hospital.
It is said that the CPF members were at Lugongozo Junior Secondary School in Tina Falls near Qumbu, and were preparing for their evening patrols when they were attacked.
“We are once again and tragically reminded that South Africa is facing a crime emergency, which requires the attention and convening power of President Cyril Ramaphosa,” Gana said.
The unknown suspects are still at large, and a motive for the shooting is unknown at this stage.
Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Cape, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene said they are concerned that those who are working and assisting the police to hunt down the suspects are being targeted.
