The United Democratic Movement (UDM) has condemned the alleged non-payment of Municipal rates and services by the Mayor of Buffalo City in the Eastern cape province.
This follows reports by the Sunday World newspaper revealing that Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Princess Faku and the manager in her office, Ntsikelelo Mcingane, have not been paying for their rates and services.
“Sunday World has seen Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality records dated November 23, 2024, which show that Faku owes R30 088.89 and Mcingane owes R71 802.46 in unpaid rates and services,” the publication said.
Anele Skoti, UDM Councillor and Whip in Buffalo City Metropolitan Council, said this is unacceptable behaviour from leaders entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring good governance and accountability.
Skoti called on Mayor Faku and her office manager to settle their outstanding debts and issue a public apology “for their failure to comply”.
“The UDM further urges the Municipal council to take appropriate action to ensure that no individual, regardless of their position, is allowed to disregard their financial obligations to the Municipality,” Skoti added.
Several attempts by Vulankungu to reach the Mayor via her office were unsuccessful.
