ActionSA says the resignation of Executive Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda is due to its intervention in the City of Johannesburg, suggesting that his tenure “was characterised by failure and catastrophic incompetence.”
“ActionSA argued from the day of his election that Cllr. Gwamanda, who replaced another disastrous Mayor from Al Jama-ah, was simply not fit for the role and would certainly be unable to meet the demands of the job. One year later, we are regrettably reminded of how accurate our warnings have proven to be,” the Herman Mashaba-led party said in a statement.
Gwamanda announced that he had submitted his resignation to the council speaker on Tuesday.
“As the youngest mayor of Johannesburg, I am humbled by the opportunity to have led this city and to have stabilised it financially and administratively, following the collapse of the multiparty coalition government,” he said.
Gwamanda also stated that he would continue to serve the people of Johannesburg as a councillor.
“At the heart of our fight for the residents, was to ensure the turnaround in key frontline service delivery matters including infrastructure renewal and the rejuvenation of the Inner City,” ActionSA explained.
Meanwhile, speaking at the memorial service of gunned down EFF Councillor Moshe Mphahlele, last week, Gwamanda said those who want him to resign call him incompetent “because I refuse to have tea with their white friends.”
The Speaker of Council, Cllr. Margaret Arnolds, said she will convene an extraordinary council meeting on 16 August to elect the City’s new mayor.
