The leader of ActionSA, Mr. Herman Mashaba, together with the party’s Free State provincial chairperson Patricia Kopane, on Wednesday visited Jagersfontein to inspect the living conditions of locals.
In September last year, at least one person died and over 40 were taken to hospital while two others went missing after a dam wall of a disused mine near the residential area burst, causing mudslide, destroying homes and critical infrastructure.
“It has been nine months since the Jagersfontein dam wall collapsed, and the small town’s residents have been left on their own. Various government departments made promises to Jagersfontein residents, but to date, nothing has been done, and more than 100 families remain displaced,” Mashaba said.
Kopane highlighted that Jagersfontein is now a ghost town but “this government has done absolutely nothing” to change the situation.
“It [the town] should be dealt as a crime scene, but the mine is still operational. The ANC government came in here with a PR stunt right after [the incident] happened. Their motive, to silence your voice. A year later after President Ramaphosa himself made promises to the community, zero has been done,” Kopane noted.
The two leaders also distributed essential food supplies to residents and vowed to continue supporting the Jagersfontein community.
