The Alfred Duma local municipality has responded to a video circulating on TikTok, of a man questioning the construction of toilets at a single home that allegedly cost R15 million.
In a statement issued by the Office of the Mayor on Wednesday, the municipality is pleading with members of the public “not to communicate false information that will end up misleading the community.”
In the video, posted by @dumisani.ngubane with the caption “Inkatha ayicacise lensambatheka yase Alfred Duma yama toilet,” the TikTok user is demanding answers from the IFP-led municipality, saying that its leadership must take full accountability and explain how the toilets ended up being built in one home at such a high cost.
In its response, the Alfred Duma Local Municipality categorically distanced itself from this toilet saga, explaining that according to the spheres of government, its responsibilities are not exactly identical to those of Uthukela District, which it falls under.
“We are told that the matter is currently under investigation and we call on people not to make false speculation until findings of the investigation are concluded.
“We wish to remind members of the public about the government’s roles and responsibilities,” the municipality emphasized.
Furthermore, the Municipality made it clear that the provision of sanitation is not part of its functions, and the matter under investigation about these toilets allegedly constructed for one family is not within its mandate.
