The much-anticipated 15th Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa (BRICS) Summit has kicked off at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg.
This year’s summit, themed “BRICS and Africa: Partnership for Mutually Accelerated Growth, Sustainable Development, and Inclusive Multilateralism,” is the largest gathering of heads of state and government of the Global South in recent years. At least 40 high-ranking delegates from Africa and across the world will be attending the 3-day event.
The 15th BRICS summit is the first to be held in person since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic and its subsequent global restrictions.
Russian President Vladimir Putin will fully participate in the summit via videoconference while Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is in Johannesburg to represent Russia in person, the Kremlin announced on its website.
The BRICS leaders are expected to deliver their opening statements later in the day.
