President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has convened another Extraordinary Summit of the Authority on the political situation in the Republic of Niger.
The Summit will be held in Abuja, on Thursday, 10 August 2023. ECOWAS leaders are expected to contemplate the latest developments in the political situation in Niger.
Meanwhile, thousands of people in Niger marched to the country’s main stadium in the capital Niamey on Sunday, demonstrating their support for the junta that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum in a military coup last month.
Videos circulating on social media showed crowds cheering several members of the caretaker government – the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland – who were present in a defiant signal as the seven-day deadline given to the military by ECOWAS to reinstate President Bazoum expired.
The National Council stressed that it will not give up its steps, despite the expiration of the ultimatum of the ECOWAS bloc.
On 26 July 2023, Niger’s presidential guard, led by General Abdourahmane Tchiani, staged a coup and detained Mohamed Bazoum. In a message broadcast on national TV, Colonel Major Amadou Abdramane declared that they had overthrown the president, suspended Niger’s Constitution and created the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP).
Negotiations are still underway between the coup plotters and an ECOWAS envoy regarding the safety of President Bazoum, who is being held by the presidential guard.
