Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has strongly condemned the terrorist attack that happened on Friday, at Lhubirira Secondary School in Kasese District, Uganda.
The gruesome attack, reportedly carried out by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) militia, near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, left at least 42 students dead, more injured and others unaccounted for.
Executive Secretary of IGAD, Dr Workneh Gebeyehu, said the terrorist attack was cowardly and senseless. He extended his heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the victims who tragically lost their lives “in this heinous act” and wished a swift, full recovery to those who sustained injuries.
“During this challenging time, IGAD stands in solidarity with the Government of Uganda and its people. Dr Gebeyehu assures them of the organization’s unwavering support and commitment to working together in combating terrorism and promoting peace and security in the region.
“IGAD remains dedicated to fostering cooperation and collaboration among its member states to address such threats and to ensure the safety and well-being of their citizens,” the bloc said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni conveyed his condolences to the affected families and the whole Country.
“This new atrocity by the elements of the ADF is criminal, desperate, terrorist and futile. It will not save them. May the souls of our children rest in eternal peace,” Museveni said.
