Rise Mzansi says the violent death of Lusikisiki community members who were gunned down over the weekend must be given full attention by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
A total of 18 people were killed in a gruesome mass shooting in Ngobozana village, located near the coast of the Eastern Cape province.
“One death as a result of crime is too many, but 18 is simply and tragically a clear signal that South Africa is facing an ongoing crime emergency. Putting this into context, the last quarter crime statistics show that 68 people are murdered every month, meaning that this single incident accounts 26% of the monthly average,” said Makashule Gana, the party’s National Assembly Caucus Whip.
He suggested that Ramaphosa be regularly briefed by law enforcement officers, “and in turn, with the [Police] Minister and National Commissioner keep the people of South Africa updated on progress.”
Meanwhile, Ramaphosa assured the grieving families that the South African Police Service (SAPS) has mobilised all available resources to bring the perpetrators to justice.
A specialised team of detectives and forensic experts was deployed to the crime scene to expedite the investigation, the office of the Presidency said.
The President noted that this incident is part of a troubling pattern, with 38 people having been killed in similar attacks over the past two years.
