President Cyril Ramaphosa has welcomed the release of the preliminary results of the recently held general elections in Mozambique.
The Presidency said on Sunday that, based on the preliminary results, Ramaphosa offered his warm congratulations to President-Elect Daniel Francisco Chapo and his party, Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo).
Chapo was officially declared the winner of the October 9 presidential elections by the National Electoral Commission (CNE). He is set to succeed Filipe Nyusi and become the fifth President of Mozambique, after winning with a significant margin in several strategic provinces of the country.
According to the results of the general vote count, announced by the president of the CNE, Carlos Matsinhe, in Maputo, Chapo won with more than 50% of the votes in all constituencies in the country, totalling 4,912,762 votes.
Venâncio Mondlane, supported by the extra-parliamentary Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique (Podemos), came in second place, with 20.32%, totalling 1,412,517 votes.

President Ramaphosa commended the people of Mozambique for “their active and enthusiastic participation” in the elections, especially women who constituted 53 percent of the voters.
“The President notes that these elections are historic since they were held 32 years following the signing of the General Peace Agreement (GPA), which brought an end to the civil war and introduced multi-party democracy in Mozambique,” said the Presidency.
It added that Ramaphosa has expressed concern about the ongoing post-election violence and the deaths of Elvino Dias and Paulo Guambe, and many other people who have lost their lives.
“President Ramaphosa reiterates the call made by various leaders in Mozambique to the law enforcement agencies to speedily investigate these incidents and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“Furthermore, President Ramaphosa calls for calm and restraint and urges all the disaffected parties to exhaust the established legal remedies to resolve their election grievances,” said the Presidency.
The Mozambican Constitutional Council is expected to validate and proclaim the electoral results in the next 14 days.
