The Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC) has expressed its heartfelt condolences on the passing of the iconic playwright and musician Mbongeni Ngema.
Born on 10 May 1955, Ngema lost his life in a head-on vehicle collision on Wednesday evening, 27 December 2023, whilst returning from a funeral at Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape.
A luminary in the arts and a fervent advocate for African unity, Ngema’s profound impact resonates with the very essence of our struggle, the PAC said in a statement.

“His groundbreaking work, notably in Sarafina and other artistic endeavors, served as a powerful voice, articulating the aspirations and challenges of our people. Ngema’s commitment to promoting African identity aligns seamlessly with the principles upheld by the PAC,” the Party added.
Born in the town of Verulam in KwaZulu-Natal, Ngema’s work impacted audiences around the world and made a significant contribution in telling the South African story. His work was internationally acclaimed, receiving Tony Award nominations for Asinamali and Sarafina.
Ngema also received Grammy Award nominations through his work in Sarafina and The Lion King. Locally, he received several accolades such as Lifetime Achievement Awards at the South African Music Awards (SAMAS) and the Naledi Theatre Awards.
“As we bid farewell to a cultural icon and activist, we remember Mbongeni Ngema not only for his artistic brilliance but also for his unwavering dedication to the cause of Pan Africanism. May his legacy inspire future generations to strive for a united and empowered Africa.
“Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who mourn this significant loss. May Mbongeni Ngema rest in eternal peace,” said the PAC.
