Russia says it welcomes the recently increased interest on the part of Saudi Arabia in playing an active role in solving not only regional issues, but also those problems that stand high on the global agenda.
Sergey Lavrov, the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, made the remarks on Thursday at a press conference in Moscow following talks with his Saudi counterpart Faisal Bin Farhan, during his official visit to the capital.
Lavrov also stressed that Russia is satisfied with how its relations with Saudi Arabia have been developing.
“We do consider them a priority and we have been doing our best to put to practice the top-level agreements being reached between Russian President and His Majesty, King of Saudi Arabia and Crown Prince,” Lavrov said.
Speaking alongside his Russian counterpart, Prince Faisal bin Farhan told the press that Saudi Arabia is ready to make every effort to resolve the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.
“We discussed with Mr. Minister the situation in Ukraine. We reiterated our position on a political solution to the crisis, on alleviating the humanitarian problems in that country caused by the crisis, especially those that affect developing countries,” Farhan reiterated.
On February 26, the Saudi Foreign Minister made his first working visit to Ukraine since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the countries.
At a media briefing following his meeting with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, he said the kingdom was interested in supporting any initiatives that would help to de-escalate tensions and achieve lasting peace.
