The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) says it notes the judgement handed down by the Electoral Court in relation to the registration matter of Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) party.
This, as the ruling African National Congress (ANC) on Tuesday failed to invalidate the registration of the newly formed MK Party.

In a unanimous decision, the Electoral Court has found that there is nothing unlawful about the IEC’s registration of the MK party, as it had followed all necessary procedure.
“This judgement provides the necessary clarity and certainty to enable the finalisation of candidate nomination processes. Additionally, the ruling confirms that the decision to register this party was taken regularly and in terms of the law,” the IEC said in a statement.
The electoral court said the ANC’s application to bring the matter straight to the court would undermine the provisions of the Electoral Commission Act that prescribe that a matter should be ventilated fully through the commission before it is brought before the court.
Without jurisdiction, the court cannot consider the merits of the case.
The electoral court’s ruling means the MK party will be on the ballot papers for the 2024 national and provincial elections on May 29.
